NAMI on Campus UCMerced

Jonathan Vickrey – President; Arrash Abri – Vice President

P O Box 2087

Contact Phone Number: 209-381-6844

Contact Emai: l jvickrey@ucmerced.edu

In 2010, students founded NAMI on Campus Merced, a NAMI (or National Alliance on Mental Illness) affiliated organization aiming to provide mental health support, education, and advocacy to the students and surrounding community of UC Merced.

The onset of mental illness poses a significant risk to college students, who occupy the age group most at risk for the development of psychiatric symptoms.

Approximately one-half of those with a mental illness will begin experiencing symptoms by their mid-teens, and three-fourths of mental illnesses will present by the mid-twenties.

However, given adequate support and appropriate policies, students with a mental illness do not have to abandon their educational goals. NAMI on Campus Merced intends to support students at UC Merced by providing advocacy and assistance. Transitioning to college is a stressful time for all students, let alone those dealing with a mental illness.

NAMI on Campus Merced can assist these students and their families in ways ranging from registering from Disability Services to providing peer support. Getting prompt treatment and support is key in reducing the burden psychiatric conditions place on the lives of students, and NAMI on Campus Merced can help in many ways.

NAMI on Campus Merced will also be hosting NAMI Peer-to-Peer, and education course for people with a mental illness, open to community members and students alike. .

Peer-to-Peer consists of ten two-hour units and is taught by a team of two trained “Mentors” and a volunteer support person, all of whom are personally experienced at living well with a mental illness.

Participants come away from the course with a binder of hand-out materials, as well as many other tangible resources: an advance directive; a “relapse prevention plan” to help identify telltale feelings, thoughts, behavior, or events that may warn of impending relapse and to organize for intervention; mindfulness exercises to help focus and calm thinking; and survival skills for working with providers and the general public.

Sponsored by NAMI Merced County, local affiliate of the national parent organization; NAMI on Campus Merced is a registered club with the Office of Student Life at UC Merced, which intends to improve services and raise campus awareness at the University and in the community through its partnership with Counseling and Psychological Services, Disability Services and the Department of Student Affairs at UC Merced.

MOPS

MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers

Mothers of Preschoolers, a program designed to nurture mothers with children from birth through kindergarten.

a program designed to nurture mothers with children from birth through kindergarten. MOPS groups meet in churches throughout the United States, Canada, and 19 other countries. The women are of many ages and backgrounds, but share the same desire – to be the best moms they can be!

MOPS is dedicated to the message that “mothering matters,” and that moms of young children need encouragement during these critical early years. MOPS exists to encourage, equip and develop every mother of preschooler to realize her potential as a woman, mother and leader in the name of Jesus Christ.

Merced MOPS

mops7

mops7

is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering and inspiring women in their journey to be the best mom possible. Our primary tools for doing so are regular meetings where moms gather together to build friendships and to encourage one another.

mops6

mops6

MOPS offers an authentic community where moms can come and experience encouragement, support, and hope with other moms. Our meetings are designed to provide them with opportunities to relax, make new friends, enjoy adult conversation, learn a new skill or craft, hear guest speakers, and be involved in group discussions of interest for mothers with young children. It’s a great place to energize and get connected with other moms!

Mom’s Night Out

Outside of our regular meetings moms have the opportunity to strengthen their new and budding friendships at our monthly Mom’s Night Out, organized play dates throughout the year including summer park dates and at our special family events. Moms also deliver dinners to each other after a new arrival and during a time of need. Annually, MOPS hosts a photo booth at Yosemite Church Harvest Party,

mops2

mops2

Santa House (a weekend spent at the Beautiful Historic Mansion Inn for the kids to sit on Santa’s lap and take a picture, crafts and much more) and Spring Fling (a fun Easter celebration with an egg hunt, crafts and photos).

In addition, moms have created groups outside of MOPS open for anyone to attend. A few of these groups are: a couples/marriage group that meets weekly, knitting group, book club, freezer meal exchange group and more.

mops4

mops4

Merced MOPS

is much more than just a mom’s club. Outside of all the fun activities, encouragement, enrichment, etc.; these beautiful women are helping people throughout the world with service projects reaching others on different continents!

Annually, MOPS moms put together Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes (Samaritan’s Purse) that are sent to children all over the world. In recent years, moms have sent letters to US soldiers, made blankets for local children in need, helped to clean local parks and beautify our community, and supported Alpha Pregnancy Crisis Center with “baby showers” (showering Alpha with baskets full of donations for the families Alpha supports), monetary support during Alpha’s Baby Bottle Boomerang fundraiser and annual Alpha Walk.

mops10

mops10

Currently this year MOPS moms are supporting Blood:Water Mission by putting up a Lemon Aid stand at all our events to sell lemonade, coffee and/or water. The profits are donated to Blood:Water Mission to provide people in Africa with clean, safe water. $1 = 1 year of clean drinking water!

The connections made within MOPS are carried with moms even after her graduation and become friendships for life! Every mother of a preschooler can benefit from joining a MOPS group; to grow herself, her family, help her community and serve people all over the world.
